On may 29 and may 30, I was lucky enough to volunteer at the famous bi-yearly immigration salon at the montreal convention center!
My schedule on day 1 was from 7:00 am to 6:00pm. I was at the registration. If people had signed up on eventbrite, i told them to go up the escalator and if they weren't, I signed them up. The process was actually hard with multiple steps, going back in fort into emails and the website. Honestly, it wasn't the most fun position, but I had amazing co-workers. They are francisation students and the ones who worked with me came from Cuba, Peru and Colombia. Whenever they would speak spanish together, I would just stand and listen, then say a word, it had everyone shocked, i loved working with them.
After a while, our feet started hurting, so i took the initiative to grab chairs. Last year, I would not have had the confidence to do so. I was pretty proud of myself.
On the second day, I was moved inside of the convention at the cv improvement booth, all I had to do was tell the people where to sit and count them. I was with Allyssa (a honors health science student) and Carlos (a francisation student). That job was so much easier than the one I had the other day.
I really liked the intensive 20h spent at the immigration convention, it definetly made me more sensible to the struggle that new immigrants face. Figuring out everything from the ultimate beginning in another language isn't for the weak and all of them seemed to be smart, kind, loving and hardworking individuals.
linked is my confirmation of volunteering!
Until next time,
MMD
